Symptoms to Watch Out For

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of permanent molars to emerge at the back of the mouth, behind the second set of molars. They typically come through between the late teens and mid-twenties, although this timeline can vary. Some people may develop them earlier, later, or even not at all. While wisdom teeth can sometimes come in without any immediate issues, there are several reasons why they may need to be removed.

When should wisdom teeth be removed?

  • They may come in at an angle or become impacted, pressing against nearby teeth.
  • Lack of space can lead to crowding, which may cause pain and other complications.
  • Improper positioning can make them difficult to clean, leading to trapped food and potential decay.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth are more prone to infection.

The Wisdom Tooth Removal Process

Removing wisdom teeth can often be done by your dentist, but in some cases, it may require a surgical procedure performed by an oral surgeon. After an initial assessment, your dentist will provide more details about the type of extraction you’ll need. You might have all four teeth removed in one session, or it may be done gradually over multiple appointments.

Examining Your Teeth

Before scheduling your extraction, we’ll carefully examine your teeth and jaw. You’ll need X-rays to assess the position of your wisdom teeth and the structure of their roots. This helps us determine if the teeth need to be removed, if a simple extraction is possible, or if surgery is required. We aim to ensure there are no surprises!

The Removal Process

During your first visit, our team will explain what to expect and how to prepare. Depending on your preferences and your dentist’s recommendation, we’ll administer local freezing, sedation, or general anesthesia. Using minimally invasive techniques, we’ll remove your wisdom teeth as gently as possible, ensuring your comfort and a faster recovery.

Aftercare

You may be asked to have a friend or family member accompany you to your appointment, assist with your ride home, and stay with you while you recover. We’ll give you detailed aftercare instructions, including helpful advice on what to do and what to avoid to ensure a smooth and quick recovery. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to us—we’re always here to assist you!

Cost Of A Wisdom Tooth Removal In Sparta

The cost of wisdom tooth removal can vary widely. For those with typical insurance coverage, the out-of-pocket cost for a simple single tooth extraction generally ranges from $100 to $200+. Without insurance, you can expect to pay approximately $200 to $600+ per tooth for a straightforward extraction.

It’s challenging to provide an exact cost for wisdom teeth removal online or over the phone, as each treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs and can only be determined after an in-person oral exam. However, here are the two main types of extractions that can give you a better idea of what to expect in terms of cost:

  • Simple Tooth Extraction

A simple extraction is performed on a wisdom tooth that is fully erupted (visible in the mouth) and not causing complications. This procedure can typically be carried out by a general dentist using local anaesthesia. If your wisdom tooth can be removed quickly and without difficulty, the cost will generally be lower.

  • Surgical Tooth Extraction

A surgical extraction is more involved and may be required if the wisdom tooth hasn’t fully erupted, is impacted, has complex roots, or is positioned poorly in relation to the second molar. This procedure demands more skill, care, and attention, leading to higher costs.

Please note, no dental practice can provide an accurate estimate over the phone, as each procedure depends on various factors. Every case is unique, so it’s crucial to consult with a dentist who will assess your individual situation and discuss different treatment options with you.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

While many people believe that wisdom teeth need to be removed, they only require extraction if they become impacted or cause problems with your jaw or neighbouring teeth.

Advancements in dental care have made the process much more comfortable. We use modern techniques to reduce discomfort and work efficiently, ensuring minimal trauma to support a quicker recovery. You’ll also receive detailed aftercare instructions to aid your healing.

About an hour after your procedure, you can remove the gauze and start eating soft foods. During the first 24 hours, stick to soft options and avoid hot foods or drinking from a straw for several hours to prevent complications.

We’ll provide tailored aftercare instructions during your appointment. Here are some general tips to help with your recovery and reduce the risk of complications:

  • Refrain from spitting, mouth rinsing, blowing your nose, using a straw, or smoking in the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid touching the extraction site with your fingers or tongue.
  • Stay away from hot foods and drinks.
  • Don’t take aspirin, as it can interfere with blood clotting.
  • Rest and avoid physical activities or exercise.

It’s ideal to take three to four days of rest or light duties to allow your body to heal properly. While full recovery typically takes about two weeks, you should experience minimal discomfort during this time.

I had a very good experience. I got an appointment. Very fast and I wasn't even a patient....yet. The staff and dentist were very kind and courteous. I am terrified of having dental work done. I was only there for a temporary fix, but I felt safe. I will definitely be going back.

I was calling different Dental practices because I was told I needed an oral surgeon. I spoke with Mira at Sparta Dental Associates and she told me that they did not have an oral surgeon on staff. I was ready to hang up, when Mira said "wait a minute, don't give up. Email your x-ray and I will ask the doctor if he can help". I did as she asked, and she called me back with an appointment that day. At the office the entire staff made me feel comfortable the moment I walked in the door. Dr. Jay, as well sat and talked to me and explained what he was about to do. He too made me very comfortable. He went to work and removed the remains of my broken tooth without pain. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Jay and the staff at Sparta Dental Associates.
